FAQ
Why is using BakeUp different from standard fish baking in the oven?
With standard baking in the tray, your fish actually cooks in its own juices and becomes soggy. When using BakeUp, the fish is exposed to heat evenly from all sides and it actually bakes, getting that crispy outer skin on both sides.
Is using BakeUp better than standard fish baking?
We won’t go that far to say it’s better, but if you like that crispy crust on your fish then it’s most likely you will enjoy BakeUp.
Is baking with BakeUp a healthier choice?
BakeUp lets you choose if you want to add oil in the BakeUp cup or bake without oil. But hey, since BakeUp is made for fish exclusively, if you’re using BakeUp – you’re eating healthy!
What material is BakeUp made of and is it safe?
BakeUp is made of food grade silicone – platinum cured (FDA, EC1935/2004 compliant). Silicone does not release any compounds during washing or baking, not even at high temperatures. It contains no plastic, no rubber and no toxic particles whatsoever. The same goes for the coloring – BakeUp uses only FDA, Bfr, EC1935/2004 compliant dyes that pose no harm to humans or the environment.
Where was BakeUp made?
The idea for BakeUp originated in Croatia but it was designed and made in Italy.
What kind of fish can BakeUp be used for?
BakeUp is made for medium-sized fish such as sea bass, gilthead seabream, European hake, larger pieces of chub mackerel, etc.
What size of fish is suitable for BakeUp?
BakeUp cup is 7 cm wide, so it is suitable for any fish in which you can make at least 7-8 cm long belly incision – such as sea bass, gilthead seabream, European hake, larger pieces of chub mackerel, to name just a few. It’s simple – if it fits on the upper part of BakeUp without toppling over, it’s a good BakeUp match!
Can I use BakeUp with store-bought pre-cleaned fish?
Well, yes and no, it depends on how it has been cleaned at the factory. For more details on cleaning the fish, see the next question.
Is the way I clean the fish important?
Yes. Even though it does not differ from the standard way of cleaning the fish. But here are the instructions:
- Scale the fish.
- On the fish’s belly, you’ll find a small hole about 5 to 7 cm from the tail, depending on the size of your fish.
- With the tip of the knife, draw a shallow 7-8 cm long cut along the belly of the fish from this hole to the base of the gills.
- The cut should be deep enough to slice through the flesh, but do not pierce the innards.
- Once the belly is opened, use your fingers and pull out the insides. It should all come out smoothly, but check for any remnants, as some fish have kidneys near the back.
- Leave the head and gills on the fish, you do not want the cavity to be too big, ideally it should be the same size as the BakeUp cup.
- Rinse out the inside of the fish with cold water.
- Now it is ready to be used with the BakeUp.
What if I make too long a cut?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Just hold the BakeUp with one hand and use the other to wiggle the fish back and forth to find the most stable position.
Should I use oil for baking with BakeUp?
That’s completely up to you. BakeUp gives you the option of baking with or without oil. If you are using oil, we recommend extra virgin olive oil – you just pour it in the BakeUp cup alongside herbs and spices and it will aromatize the fish from the inside.
Can I wash BakeUp in the dishwasher?
Yes! That’s another beauty of it, it is very low-maintenance.
Can I bake vegetables alongside fish?
Sure! Chop the vegetables and toss it on the tray along with fish on the BakeUp. Just time it well – bear in mind that it will take approximately 30 minutes for the fish.
How and when do I remove fish from the BakeUp?
When the fish is done, remove the tray from the oven. If you’re wearing oven mitts, you can lift the fish from the BakeUp immediately. If not, wait a few minutes so you don’t get burned.
Is there a larger size of BakeUp?
Not at the moment, but we have a plan to produce BakeUp Large and maybe even XL.
How do I dispose of my BakeUp?
Silicone products are not hazardous and they can be safely disposed of as regular household waste. However, there might be a specialized recycling centre in your local area that accepts and has recycling program for silicone.
